Event: Faster, Smarter, Safer - Progress and Pitfalls in Outbreak Preparedness

Gabrielle Fitzgerald, Founder and CEO Panorama

In 2018, the world’s vulnerabilities to infectious disease were felt acutely in places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India, Nigeria, and Madagascar. Diseases like Ebola, Nipah, Lassa fever, yellow fever, and the plague kept healthcare workers on the offensive.

In these efforts, we have witnessed what happens when leadership, know-how, innovation, and partnerships converge to stop a threat in its tracks. Countries are able to respond faster, with more coordinated international support.

New tools have been deployed and are on the horizon to prevent and respond to outbreaks. While the world must not rest on its laurels, we should celebrate and pause to take lessons from what worked well during these outbreaks.

On September 26, 2018 on the sidelines of the 73rd UN General Assembly, PATH, Panorama, and the United Nations Foundation hosted an event to celebrate the global community’s success in stemming recent outbreaks while highlighting what still needs to be done to ensure the world is prepared for a major outbreak.
